My 2019 Life Goals
With the end of 2019 just around the corner, I’m publishing my life goals! I’ve done well one some, and not as well on others, but I’m excited to continue to reflect and work on these areas.
Leverage the SMART framework: Specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and time-boundhttps://www.nytimes.com/guides/smarterliving/resolution-ideas
2019 Core Values Exercise
Connection & Community: Connect individuals and groups through communication, openness, and experience.
Host or champion/drive one connection/community event per month. Examples can include: Women’s leadership happy hour, dinner/drinks for communities at our house or in other spaces, charity events, movie or music meet-ups, art events etc. These events may include alcohol, but ideally do not revolve around alcohol.
Why? I am privileged to have an amazing home space to throw events. I find purpose through connection & community -I will strive to more actively and intentionally create these experiences.
Write at least 52 (1x per week) physical cards to friends & family.
Why? Handwritten notes are a thoughtful complementary way to connect to individuals. I write a lot of email & send a lot of text messages … I’d love to get back to written notes.
Movement & Activity: Move with agility, control and focus every day. Play through athletic and creative physical activity.
Unlock 3 athletic achievements across a multitude of sports (examples could include: Climbing a 5.11c, more regularly climbing 5.11as/bs, learning to surf, improving in moguls, biking a century, etc.
Why: With age, it’s increasingly difficult to be prescriptive with the exact athletic goals I want to accomplish. This year, I’ll give myself the flexibility to adapt throughout the year. NOTE - these goals do not need to be “high-points” in my life, example: I’ve likely already run the fastest ½ and full marathon I’ll ever run -I did that in my 20s… but doing another race would be considered an accomplishment.
Leadership: Influence, empower, motivate, connect and inspire groups to drive to a shared goal.
Take on one new leadership role that benefits a diverse community → women and/or POC. Leadership roles can be individual contribution roles or management roles.
Why: I have mostly focused on leadership of communities for women & POC through Pandora. I’d like to push myself to extend beyond the walls of “work”. Where else can I use my privilege, my team, and my skill set benefit diverse communities? Time to start investigating!
Say Yes! And embrace and seek out newness and change. 2019 will likely be both a challenging and opportunistic year. My career may deeply change, opening up new possibilities. I commit to being intentionally flexibly as I work through this (likely) change.
Additional Values to Nourish in 2019
Competition: Tackle challenges and strive to win in individual competition, or competing with others.
Effectiveness: Efficiently and effectively accomplish goals. Decisiveness over perfection.
Reflection: Devote time and space to remembering the past and learning for the future.
Joy/Beauty: Surround myself and participate in life’s beauties → art, music, design, and delicious food. Patrick calls this Transcendence - and I love that description.
